I was browsing around a few moments ago, and I happened upon Dell.com. There, I see featured their new Studio Hybrid Desktop. I look at the picture for a moment, confused…”that looks like little more than an external hard drive” I think to myself. My interest is piqued, so I click to continue.
As it turns out, it’s a very space-efficient, very attractive PC. Not only that, it claims to be “green” and “power-efficient” - I would imagine so, considering how much less material it requires to manufacture (80%, it says). How “green” a product is seems to be increasingly significant these days, it’s a wonder why they don’t mention this in the commercials.
The aesthetic appeal in the Studio Hybrid is great. Hell, it’s offered in six different colours, or bamboo if you so choose. And it’s relatively small - 8.3” x 7.7” x 2.8” (a bit larger than the Mac mini’s 6.5” x 6.5” x 2.0”). Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure this is unprecedented, at least when it comes to non-Apple, corporate-manufactured PCs.
Apple’s had the leg up on design innovation for years (and functionality but we’re not talking about that), I’m glad that Windows-loyalists can finally have a chance to show off their new computer and beam as people gawk, “Oh! How stylish, yet functional!” At least I would, and that’s a phrase I usually reserve for Ikea products.
Admittedly, the technical specs aren’t to die for - it may as well be a laptop minus the display and peripherals.Personally, I wouldn’t get it. It’s not powerful enough for the abuse I would put it through. For an image-conscious consumer with about $500 to kill and in need of a simple, lightweight PC without fancy-schmancy performance shit that goes beyond word processing, slideshows, spreadsheets, etc., fuckin’ go for it, I say. But, if you’re the type that rips and burns CDs and DVDs and uses your PC within an inch of its life, don’t do it.
If the opportunity ever arises, though I doubt it will (I can’t imagine a situation in which such a chance would present itself), I’d only play with it for a couple hours with absolutely no intention of buying. Take it apart. Plaayy.
None.
